Berkana Language Center announces two classes in early 2011:

Introduction to Court Interpreting – non-language specific

Date: April 15 and 16 and 29 and 30, 2011 – 8 hours per day, total of 32 hours

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., with 1 hour for lunch on your own. There are places to eat on Richmond nearby, including a snack bar on the first floor.

Parking: Drive to the back of the 6-story brick building on the North side of Richmond Ave. and park free in any space that is not reserved. The building belongs to Leisure Learning Unlimited.

Instructors: M. Eta Trabing, a federally certified interpreter/translator, and Graciela Zozaya, a legal interpreter/translator and certified medical interpreter.

Costs: $500.00 for the class, plus the mandatory book, Introduction to Court Interpreting ($40.00)

Why: If you are truly bilingual, preferably at college level or the equivalent in experience, and have thought you might want to be a court/judiciary interpreter, this is your chance to find out exactly what it entails, how much and what you will have to learn to pass the certification exam and get your Texas license, how long it will probably take you to prepare for the exam and how and where you can work and earn as a free-lance interpreter. At the end of the course, you will have acquired all the tools that will help you make a decision on whether this career is for you, as you will have had the possibility of finding out all about it before spending a lot more time, money and effort in deciding if this is for you or not. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions. There will be further classes in sight translation, consecutive interpretation and finally, simultaneous interpretation, scheduled for later in the year.

Upcoming TDLR Classes

CE credits for licensed Texas court interpreters and all others interested in the subjects. American Translators Association (ATA)-approved credit for the same number of CE credit hours. All classes will be held in the conference room of the La Quinta Inn & Suites 22455 Katy Freeway (Interstate 10), Katy, TX 77450 (281.392.9800). If you're coming from out of town, it is also a nice place to stay.

Registration deadline with PayPal: seven (7) days before each course. Personal checks must be received 10 days before each course. For additional information or questions, please call Eta Trabing at 832-437-2666.

All classes provide 1 hour for lunch, or you can bring a sack lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided. The hotel has a soft drinks machine.

Certificates of completion will be given to participants, and their participation posted on the TDLR website the day after the class. If you are not taking CE courses for TDLR or for ATA, you will still get a certificate of completion. Handouts will be provided for all classes.
