Translation Tools and the Changing Web Technology
This workshop explores the state of current tools for translators, including web technologies such as wikis, blogs, Google searches, and internet-based parallel corpora for terminologies. It also looks at where technology is going in the next two to five years and the impact that will have on individual translators and small translator teams. The workshop will focus on Spanish, with tools for additional languages (e.g., Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Persian, etc.) being discussed depending on the interests of the participants. Handouts will be provided with references to resources.
Jennifer DeCamp is the Human Language Technology program manager at MITRE, a federally funded research and development center for the U.S. government. In this position, she reviews and evaluates tools for translators and helps prototype new types of tools. She also helps develop language technology standards with various organizations, including the International Organization for Standardization, and the Localization Industry Standards Association. She is currently working on developing metrics, measures, and testing approaches for evaluating technology to support human translators.

| The Fora Linguarum is an interactive translator training tool pioneered by Doris Ganser of the Mid-America Chapter of the American Translators Association (MICATA). In the Fora Linguarum, participants receive the practice documents in advance and have an opportunity to translate the text at their leisure. On the day of the session, participants will work on various activities to analyze and share comments regarding specific choices throughout the texts. The Fora Linguarum offers attendees the opportunity to obtain constructive feedback in a collaborative, informal setting. | A discussion of Computer Assisted Translation tools, focusing on Translation Memory software. Introduction to the technology, plus hands-on demonstrations of two of the leading tools in use today. Advantages and disadvantages, questions and answers. |
